Mit 13 Jahren wurde er fasziniert, als er in der Werkstatt des Pioniers Dale Velzy in Manhattan Beach mitarbeitete. Er verbrachte die Mitte der 50er Jahre in der Kstenwache auf Hawaii und surfte in den groen Wellen von Oahus North Shore und Makaha. 1958 segelte er ber den Pazifik und fhrte moderne Surfbretter nach Neuseeland ein.
